A short, unhurried journey through the last Himalayan kingdom. The flight from Kathmandu to Paro runs along the Himalaya, with Everest and Kanchenjunga outside the window on a clear day. From there you visit the capital Thimphu, cross the Dochu La pass to the riverside fortress of Punakha, and finish with the hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery on its cliff. Bhutan asks every visitor to travel with a licensed guide and pay a Sustainable Development Fee, which funds free health care and education. Both are included, along with your visa, hotels, meals and a private car and driver for the whole trip.

Day 1
A one-hour mountain flight to Paro (2,200 m). Your guide meets you at the airport for the drive along the Paro and Wang Chhu rivers to Thimphu (2,320 m), stopping at the iron-chain bridge of Tachog Lhakhang.
Day 2
See the giant Buddha Dordenma above the valley, the National Memorial Chorten where locals walk their morning circuits, the weekend market and the Folk Heritage Museum. In the evening, watch the flag lowering at Tashichho Dzong, the seat of government.
Day 3
Drive over the Dochu La pass (3,100 m), with its 108 memorial chortens and, on clear days, a sweep of Himalayan peaks. Descend to Punakha (1,200 m) for the 17th-century Punakha Dzong at the meeting of two rivers, then walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang.
Day 4
Cross the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, then drive back to Paro. Visit Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum in its old watchtower, and stroll the main street of Paro town.
Day 5
The highlight of the trip: a steady climb through pine forest to Paro Taktsang (3,120 m), the monastery that clings to a cliff 900 m above the valley. Tea at the halfway café, then an evening at a farmhouse with an optional hot-stone bath.
Day 6
Transfer to Paro airport for the flight back to Kathmandu, sitting on the right for the mountain views.
