A quieter alternative to Everest Base Camp. Leave the main trail above Namche Bazaar and follow the Dudh Koshi valley north to the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, a chain of glacial lakes beside the Ngozumpa, the longest glacier in Nepal. The high point is a dawn climb of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), whose summit looks across to four of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu. The route climbs gradually, with an acclimatisation day in Namche.
