Lumbini, in Nepal’s southern plains, is the birthplace of the Buddha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This tour visits the Maya Devi Temple and the marker stone of the birth spot, the pillar raised by the Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE, and the monastic zone where Buddhist nations from around the world have built their own temples. It also visits Tilaurakot, the excavated palace city that many scholars identify as ancient Kapilavastu, where the young prince Siddhartha grew up. Travel is by short domestic flight from Kathmandu.
